            Valley of Fear
Holmes carefully examined the scene and then concluded, "The card with V. V. 341 was merely to tell his fellows by means of newspapers that the revenge was done. Secondly, the gun placed beside the dead indicates the murderer is an American. And the boot prints on the windowsill were made by Barker. All these signs seemingly show this murder was related with the dead man's marriage and Barker." Barker was enraged when Holmes finished his frank remarks. He thought Holmes had gone too far. Having examined the scene, Holmes met Mrs. Douglas. She said, "My husband knew some authorities were chasing to kill him. He had been confined in the Valley of Fear. Once he had a fever and murmured McGinty." Then Mrs. Douglas made her way. She seemed reluctant to release too much.
Watson went alone to the garden of the manor to take a walk. Suddenly he saw Mrs. Douglas and Barker in the garden, talking and laughing. They stopped at once when seeing Watson and pretended nothing had happened.
